| | | | Brought to you by: | | | | | Friday, May 19, 2023 | This time of year – at least in the U.S. – is one when things traditionally start to decelerate, so to speak. We're rapidly approaching Memorial Day weekend, for instance, which has historically marked an unofficial summer kickoff. People take vacations. Web activity slows. The news cycle is quieter. LOL. Okay. Either this is the biggest "get it in before the slow season" week I've ever seen, or there's a shift happening in what "slow season" means anymore. Yesterday, for instance, was one of the busiest news days I've seen this time of year. (My memory might be unreliable, however, so take that with a barrel of salt.) The Supreme Court ruled on a case that our industry has been watching. A significant mobile app was launched. And people are still talking about that big ol' Senate hearing about AI. Listen, I know I'm a nerd when it comes to these matters – but I cannot get enough of being at once profoundly vigilant and leery of regulatory goings-on in our industry. On the one hand, lawmaker talk of regulating tech has historically gone, well, nowhere. At the same time, there's more of that talk taking place among more governing bodies than we've seen in a while. That's why I wanted to take a moment to highlight a piece from Associate Features Editor Kristi Hines that begs the question: Is it simply too late to regulate AI – or regulate tech at all? A complex question, to be sure: one that I'll likely be giving far too much thought this weekend. As I said – holy busy news week, Batman. Here's what else you may have missed: - OpenAI released a new ChatGPT iPhone app. Kristi Hines takes a peek at how it works here.
- SCOTUS ruled that Twitter isn't liable for extremist content in Twitter v. Taamneh. Matt Southern explains it all, including what's happening with the Gonzalez v. Google companion case, here.
- TikTok Faces a state-level ban in Montana. Matt Southern also gets into what's gearing up to be an uphill battle between governing bodies and civil rights groups here.
Phew! We did it. We actually made it to Friday. Here's to many more. Wishing you a slow-ish weekend, AZW News, WordPress By Roger Montti A recent WordPress security update featuring multiple security fixes is also causing some sites to stop functioning, causing one developer to exclaim, "This is chaos!!" The update removed a key functionality that caused numerous plugins to stop working on site that use the WordPress blocks system. Affected plugins ranged from forms to sliders to breadcrumbs. Sites that support automatic background updates automatically received the WordPress 6.2.1 update because it was a Security Release (officially it was a maintenance & security Release). According to the official WordPress release announcement, the update contained five security fixes: | | | | | Search Engine Journal By SHOPSEJ Get your brand in front of marketers, entrepreneurs, and business pros who want to do their job more successfully. More and more creators are turning to N.F.Ts to help verify authenticity and minimize fraud. Non-fungible tokens have even become the currency of choice in the metaverse. But what happens once an N.F.T. is sold? Who actually owns the copyright – the original creator or the new owner? And how do copyright laws and I.P. rights apply? There are far too many grey areas to navigate already without playing fast and loose with the copyright legislation already in place. So while the terms of N.F.T. copyright are still being defined, play it safe. Protect your copyrighted work as a creator or a brand. Claim resale royalties if the possibility exists for you. Don't use your N.F.Ts for commercial gain without the proper licensing. And never go up against Hermès. | | | Generative AI, News By Kristi Hines It seems like just yesterday (though it's been almost six months) since OpenA.I. launched ChatG.P.T., and it began making headlines. ChatG.P.T. reached 100 million users within three months, making it the fastest-growing application in decades. For comparison, it took TikTok nine months – and Instagram two and a half years – to reach the same milestone. Now, ChatG.P.T. can utilize G.P.T.-4 along with internet browsing and plugins from brands like Expedia, Zapier, Zillow, and more to answer user prompts. Big Tech companies like Microsoft have partnered with OpenA.I. to create A.I.-powered customer solutions. Google, Meta, and others are building their language models and A.I. products. Over 27,000 people - including tech C.E.Os, professors, research scientists, and politicians - have signed a petition to pause A.I. development of systems more powerful than G.P.T.-4. Now, the question may not be whether the United States government should regulate A.I. – if it's not already too late. | | | | | Webinar By Search Engine Journal With the SEO industry ever evolving and new trends constantly emerging, how do you make sure your content is up to the latest search standards?
