Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter friends! It's Wednesday, and while most of you are probably still playing Tears of the Kingdom, this past weekend was a launch window for a couple of other great titles, including Diablo 4 and Street Fighter 6. Are you playing any of them? Let us know at games@WIRED.com. And if you're not, maybe this week's stories will pique your interest. Let's start with Diablo IV. First up, Boone Ashworth, who gave us his early impressions of the game in February, is back with more thoughts after having played the game for a while leading up to the launch. His take? It's fun, hard to put down, and definitely the return to dark fantasy that the series needed. It's also a modern live service game, complete with all the things that come with that: a battle pass, microtransactions, and so on. All in all, you won't be disappointed. Next up, you may notice in Boone's review that he mentions how visceral the audio and sound effects are in Diablo IV. That's because the sound designers really had their work cut out for them bringing Sanctuary—and the beasts of hell—to life. Luke Winkie sat down with the designers who worked on Diablo IV to find out how they did it. Luckily they had a lot of pomegranates on hand. Just … trust me on that one. Let's head over to Street Fighter 6, shall we? First of all, the game has a new voice for Chun Li—which you may not really think about, until you realize that it's Jennie Kwan, an accomplished voice actor, and she's the first Asian American to voice the role. It was a dream come true for Kwan, and George Yang talked to her about why she wanted it and what she wants to bring to the role. The journey is just starting for Kwan, but she's already doing an incredible job bringing an iconic character to life. Heading back to Tears of the Kingdom for a moment, Reid McCarter points out that after spending a good chunk of time with the game, he thinks that the depths, the gloomy, always-dark world underneath Hyrule's surface, is where the real action in the game is. The game is great, make no mistake, and Reid points out that where Breath of the Wild was a bit of a sandbox, Tears of the Kingdom is more of a toy box, encouraging you to play, build, and play some more. Finally, if you didn't catch the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, and you can't really be blamed if you did, the big news is that Meta announced the Quest 3, its newest VR gaming headset. It'll retail for $500, and it presumably got pushed out when it did because, as I write this, Apple is holding WWDC, where it's expected to also announce a VR headset of its own, with plans to upset the whole VR landscape, if it has its way. (Update: Apple announced the Apple Vision Pro, which is more AR than VR, but still.) Looks like there'll be some interesting developments in the VR space in the coming months, but whether or not these new products will increase adoption is a different story. We'll just have to wait and see. |
