Dear Reader, Al-Fanar Media is keen to monitor higher education conditions in areas troubled by armed conflicts and other crises. This is part of the Solutions Journalism (SoJo) approach we adopt in our reporting. Have you heard of SoJo? Solutions journalism endeavours to showcase individuals who, despite facing common challenges and crises, have devised effective solutions. We firmly believe in sharing these bright spots, demonstrating that our Arab world extends beyond being labelled solely as a region of conflict and turmoil, and bombs and screams. At Al-Fanar Media, we stand as a testament to a region with a deep-rooted civilisation grounded in humanity. While we may encounter adversity, we remain resilient, facing our crises with unwavering courage and faith. We commit ourselves to the development of solutions and sharing them with the world. We also recognise the universal nature of challenges that necessitate collective efforts from all corners of humanity. We also believe in the innate capability of human beings to overcome obstacles and share our insights for the betterment of all. We hold a steadfast belief in empowering both youth and women. We accompany them on their educational, professional, and academic journeys, providing support every step of the way. Through our reporting of vetted information and inspiring models, we equip them to make informed decisions. These are among the topics I covered in a lecture I had the privilege of delivering to students at the Department of Journalism and Media at the American University in Cairo (AUC)’s School of International Affairs and Public Policy. Dr. Rasha Allam, the department head, graciously extended the invitation.
The lecture, titled “Introduction to Solutions Journalism (SoJo): Al-Fanar Media as a Model”, provided an overview of different journalistic models worldwide. It emphasised the importance of upholding professional standards and ethics while serving the needs of the public. The lecture also exemplifies a successful partnership between an Arab university and a media institution. Al-Fanar Media serves as a model in this respect too, always remaining open to various opportunities for cooperation. In this newsletter, we call to your attention some of our recent reporting on higher education in regions beset by conflict. We hope you enjoy these and other articles on our website. Until we meet again in a new newsletter, stay safe.
