WE4LEAD (Women’s Empowerment for Leadership and Equity in Higher Education Institutions) recently kicked off at a launch event at the Lebanese University. Co-funded by the European Union, the project involves nine universities in the Arab world and Europe.

Dear Reader,

Personally, I think there are certain aspects of life that merit celebration and recognition continuously, rather than being confined to just one day a year.

It seems that over time, International Days have become exceptions, while the essence of celebration should ideally be integrated into our everyday lives, making every day an opportunity to honour and appreciate those aspects deserving of recognition.

So, do we need to designate one day a year, or even an entire month, to celebrate women, advocate for their rights, shine a light on their issues, and highlight success stories?
Women hold a unique and revered position in our Arab societies. We are nurtured with values and principles that deeply respect and honour women. In our rich Arab cultures, women are regarded as queens, mothers of believers, fighters, ministers, teachers, and mothers.

Alongside men, they shoulder the responsibility of managing their homes, families, careers, and even contribute to the governance of their communities and nations.

We were brought up to uphold the respect, rights, protection, and dignity of women as fundamental values. Anything contrary to this is a deviation from the norm, not the other way around.

I wonder how violence, oppression, humiliation, harassment, and exploitation of women in our society become prevalent. Such behaviour bears no distinction from the age of ignorance and terrorism.

Who instilled in the minds of our youth and men the notion that one’s power is derived from imposing opinions and control over any woman? Such beliefs are not aligned with the principles of our Arab and Islamic culture and civilisation.

Upholding and revitalising our moral principles is the genuine tribute to women. Otherwise, we may soon witness the emergence of a World Day for Morality, and another for Humanity.

Until our next newsletter, stay safe.

Best regards,

The Editor
