| Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter, friends! What have you been playing this past week? I've been taking things slow and casual in Everspace 2, and after a not-too-successful raid night in Destiny 2 this weekend, I'm definitely feeling the need for an easy win or two, so I might opt to pick up something breezy where I can feel powerful. What's your go-to game when you're feeling a little down in the dumps? Let me know at games@WIRED.com. First of all, WIRED is 30 years old this year! To celebrate, we're putting together a bunch of forward-looking stories themed "In Defense of the Future" that will all live on a special anniversary site right here. And we'll be adding more stories over the course of the year! So what does this have to do with video games, you ask? Well, our most recent WIRED30 story is all about the future of accessibility in video games! Geoffrey Bunting specifically tackles accessibility for blind and visually impaired gamers, how far that's come, and where we go from here. It's a great read. Next up, have you seen the new Super Mario Bros. movie yet? It's crushing it at the box office, which is great news for the movie, great news for fans, but could be … interesting on a cultural front if Hollywood decides that's the pattern to take when it comes to adapting video games to movies. But I haven't seen it yet, so I can't really say. That's why Will Bedingfield's piece on how the movie will be hard to beat is worth checking out. Remember Space Invaders? Yup, that classic arcade game that all but defined what arcade games would be like for years? Well there's a new Space Invaders cabinet in the works right now, and the company working on it even tapped the original designer of the original game to help them build it. Craig Grannell has the whole story, including an interview with Tomohiro Nishikado, who created Space Invaders back in 1978. Come for the story of a new arcade machine in the 21st century and stay for the story of how the iconic video game came to be. By now, if you want a PlayStation 5, you probably have access to one, right? Stock is pretty stable these days, and you may even be thinking of ways to make the most of the one you have. That's why Jaina Grey just updated our list of the best PlayStation 5 accessories, from controller chargers to headphones to the killer PSVR 2, which we heartily recommend. And speaking of VR, in this week's Gear news roundup, Boone Ashworth notes that Apple's long-promised entry to the VR arena is likely going to be delayed. So we'll have to stay on the edge of our seats, wondering whether the company that made a lot of high-end technologies mainstream can do it again with virtual reality. And with that, I'll see you back here next week! |
