| Hi gamers, and welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter! I'm fresh off of playing probably entirely too much Remnant II. I hope you've had a chance to try it out too: It's an excellent distillation of what makes both co-op looter shooters fun, but also the kind of tactical challenge that makes games like Death's Door and Dark Souls fun. But the fall release season is starting to heat up. We're looking at Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield, Immortals of Avenum … the list goes on. Looking forward to anything specific in the coming months? Let us know at games@WIRED.com. First up this week, definitely take a look at Laurence Russell's months-long deep dive into the world of Critical Role, the live-play tabletop gaming show that exploded and in part popularized the genre of live-action roleplay shows. It certainly wasn't alone in the genre, but it's been groundbreaking. And at this point it's so popular that the team behind the show is looking to the future of tabletop gaming and how they can leave the gaming world and community a bit better than how they found it. To that point, Critical Role's latest show, Candela Obscura, is out now, and it's all about finding light and hope in dark and difficult places. Laurence had a chance to dive into the world of Candela Obscura as well, and we have his full Q&A with the cast of the show, including folks like Matt Mercer, Anjali Bhimani, Laura Bailey, Robbie Daymond, and more. If you're not familiar with the world of Critical Role or the people who bring it to life, the new show might be a great place to hop on the train. Next up, in the security roundup from last week, Matt Burgess and Andrew Couts noticed a story about a special kind of malware that's been spreading among Call of Duty 2 players. That's right, malware that spreads itself through multiplayer lobbies has been targeting players of the 2009 Call of Duty game, the one a lot of people widely consider the best in the franchise (and that's including the remake!). Why? Well, no one's quite sure. But Activision Blizzard did take the game off of Steam while they investigated what was going on. Over on our Gear Team, Simon Hill has a review of the Cooler Master x D-Box Motion 1 gaming chair. It's no ordinary seat: Cooler Master's first foray into office furniture features built-in speakers and motors that are designed to surround you with sound and vibrate your body in time with the games you play. Whether you want that, on the other hand, is up to you. We gave it a respectful 7/10, pointing out that for all of the cool tech in the chair, only a few games and programs are compatible, and its $2,300 price tag puts it way out of reach for most people. Last but not least, it's a new month, which means we've just updated our list of the best games available on Xbox Game Pass and the best games on PlayStation Plus. If you have a subscription to either, all the games on each service are ready and waiting for you to download and play, including new titles added every month. Check it out if you're looking for something new to try (or just fill the time before the fall release you're looking for comes out). Try something new, and I'll see you back here next week. |
