It's wednesday, which means it's time for another WIRED Games newsletter! Pull yourself away from Baldur's Gate 3 for a moment, if you don't mind. Don't worry, we'll get you back to your dice rolls in a minute. Speaking of which, virtually everyone I know right now is playing Baldur's Gate 3 or Remnant II, but what about you? Let us know what you're playing at games@WIRED.com, will you? First up this week, Grant Stoner is back with an excellent look at some of the voice actors that have been working hard to bring your favorite characters to life, from their studios either at home or in cities not traditionally associated with the VA or game dev industries. Accessibility is more than just menus and buttons on screens: It also extends to the working conditions for your favorite voice actors and developers, many of whom found inroads during the pandemic thanks to expanding remote work. But now as studios try to clamp down on worker freedoms again, their careers are in jeopardy. Next up, a huge scam targeting Fortnite and Roblox players has been hiding in plain sight, and Matt Burgess took a look last week. The scam is essentially an endless maze that promises free Robux or V-bucks if you just click that link, download that file, sign up for this service, or install that app, on and on with no actual rewards ever being delivered. All the while, the people operating this scam earn affiliate revenue from your signups and downloads. The problem has been around for years, and Matt chats with a security engineer who's been on its trail. So I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's back-to-school season. And while for some of you that probably means a ton of stress (but then again, maybe you're looking forward to it!), for many of you, that means it's time to go shopping, and our Gear Team has been taking a fresh look at our most recommended gear. First up, whether you're planning to work or play (or mostly likely both), check out our guide to the best PC monitors, updated with a new portable option and a new entry from the always-affordable folks at Monoprice. If you're a laptop person instead and don't want an external display, maybe one of these laptop and tablet stands is more up your alley. After all, ergonomics is important. Don't spend your days in your chair, all banana-shaped. Oh, and speaking of tablets, our Gear team just updated our picks for the best tablets for work and play as well. Check them out, whether you're a gamer or just like gaming on the go sometimes. Finally, for those of you who are students, don't forget you can get tons of great discounts with your university email address on lots of things, including music, streaming services, and food delivery. But most importantly, you can get great discounts on tech and peripherals. So while I can't promise you a discount on Starfield or something, you can definitely save on a new gaming mouse to celebrate the game's launch, you know what I mean? See you back here next week. |
