Welcome back to Wednesday, gamers! I've been playing a ton of Baldur's Gate 3 lately, partially because I have a D&D group with friends and the game is essentially D&D: The Game, which means it's always fun to slip back into. It's gotten me thinking: What are your nominations for "Game of the Year, 2023?" I know, picking a game of the year is ridiculous, as we've mentioned before, but I'd still love to know what your favorite title has been (or what it will be, if you're looking forward to a late-year release.) Let's get into it though, shall we? First of all, check out Reid McCarter's review of Alan Wake II, which is, as he says, the perfection of a formula that Remedy Entertainment, the game's makers, have been working on over the past 20 years. That effort started with a game I fondly remember staying up late one night (or morning, as it was) to finish: Max Payne. If you're a fan of the original game, you'll find this entry much darker and a little more violent, but it's just as rewarding. Next up, Swapna Krishna is back, this time reviewing a game called Thirsty Suitors, an action dating sim aimed squarely at the South Asian community. Well, it's actually a great game for everyone, but the story the game tells will be very familiar to people of Indian, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan descent. The cultural touch points are right there to enjoy, and even if you're not familiar with the culture, you'll find an endearing story about returning home, finding love, navigating family—you know, things we all struggle with. Meanwhile, Megan Farokhmanesh is back in Spider-Man 2, this time because the NPC dialog is so strange that she couldn't help but write something about it. Seriously, if you ever spend a little time listening to the NPCs in the game, you'll find that they have some very very odd, and at times surprisingly self-aware, conversations. It's a credit to good writing for sure, but there is another explanation. You'll have to read the piece to get it though. Last, but certainly not least, our Gear team has been busily updating our buying guides for the upcoming holiday shopping season, and gaming gear is no exception. For example, check out our review of the HyperX Cloud III wireless headset. Eric Ravenscraft gives it an impressive 8/10, largely thanks to its incredible battery life, great audio quality, and comfortable fit. But the 120 hours of battery life doesn't come without compromises, so don't expect this model to have noise cancellation or Bluetooth support. It's wireless, but via a dongle that will connect to just about anything. If the HyperX Cloud III isn't up your alley or you'd rather see more options, check out our whole rundown of the best gaming headsets for every system, with plenty of picks. Oh, and speaking of wireless things, our roundup of the best Wi-Fi routers just got a fresh update, if you're in the market for one of those instead. Now then, I'll see you next week. I've been teetering between my beloved Destiny 2, which is having a bit of a tough time right now (and all my love to my Bungie fam who have been laid off) and Baldur's Gate 3. But maybe a few more runs of Wizard with a Gun or Endless Dungeon will take my mind off things. I'll see you next week! |
