Happy Wednesday, gamers! Normally this time of year would be pretty quiet when it comes to games and gaming news, but it feels like, if anything, things are speeding up. It's looking like a mad rush through the holidays and to the end of the year. At least it's a good reminder that if you haven't filled out your end-of-year wish lists and gift lists, now is a great time! Let's get started with this week's gaming news though. First of all, check out Megan Farokhmanesh on Nintendo's latest remake of one of its gaming classics, Super Mario RPG, which launched for the Switch last week—a full 30 years after its initial release. The remake is good, obviously, but it harkens back to a time when Nintendo was a little less afraid to get weird with its games. Still, if you've never played it, or played it and loved it, it's worth your time. Then, as part of WIRED's 30th anniversary feature series, check out Geoffrey Bunting on what the game industry and gamers alike need to know about the future of game accessibility. Recent years have seen remarkable progress by both developers and passionate gamers in making sure developers and studios consider accessibility when they're building games. Now, Bunting says, studios just need to take the next step and communicate with gamers. Next, read Lauren Goode's look at VR startup Spatial.io, and how, after several pivots—including some pretty unsuccessful ones—it's heading into social gaming and mobile gaming as a way to connect with its audience. It's a story familiar to anyone watching new game studios and publishers launch, but this one is interesting because on the one hand, they're a VR startup that's still trying to make fetch happen, and on the other hand, they've tried just about everything from NFTs to VR gaming, and now they're heading into social games. We'll see if it works for them. Speaking of VR, Matt Kamen has some impressions of Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, which in general are very good. He says it's finally, finally a truly immersive VR gaming experience, which is saying a lot because, these days, the word "immersive" really has lost all of its meaning in virtually every context. But apparently Ubisoft put a lot of effort into this one, so if you're looking for new VR action games, this might be a good one. And of course, our Gear team just updated our rundown of the best Meta Quest VR games, so if you have Meta's VR headset, we have some suggestions on what to play. Last, but certainly not least, Jaina Grey (who was, again, absolutely right about Hogwarts Legacy) has been playing a lot of Baldur's Gate 3 lately, and rightfully so—the game is incredible. But since the entire gameplay model under it is essentially Dungeons and Dragons, she picked up a D&D player's handbook, which is pretty easily available. Of course, if you're not familiar with D&D, the handbook offers a ton of great tips on how you can develop your character, how your class will evolve, what you can wear, what you should save gold for, and things like that. I hadn't thought about keeping my handbook nearby while I played Baldur's Gate 3, but I'll do it now! Now then, we'll see you back here next week. If you're in the United States, we hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving! If you're not in the US, we hope you have a lovely rest of your week! See you soon. |
