Hey gamers! Welcome back to another WIRED Games newsletter! We're only a few days away from the holidays, so hopefully you're looking forward to resting a little and maybe taking a bit of a break. If not, though, godspeed getting through to the end of the year; I hope all of us have an opportunity to carve out some gaming time between now and then. If you're still shopping for someone on your gift list this year, we can help you out before it's too late. WIRED product reviewers Eric Ravenscraft and Jaina Grey have put together a killer list of gift options for the gamer in your life. You'll find a ton of goodies in there, from cute keycaps to whole keyboards and everything in between. Also, if the gamer in your life happens to love music (or just superior audio quality), Parker Hall has a list of great gift ideas for the music lover or audiophile in your life. Next up, WIRED contributor Geoffrey Bunting takes a deep dive into the new world of first-party accessible game controllers that we now find ourselves in, thanks to the launch of the Sony Access Controller (which we reviewed and gave an 8/10 score and a WIRED Recommends award to). The bottom line is that while the Sony Access Controller is a welcome, affordable addition to the gaming landscape, it still illustrates that if you're a disabled gamer, you'd better be ready to open your wallet in order to get anything approximating what other gamers get out of the box. By this point in the year, we hope you're not hurting for games to play, but if you are—somehow—and specifically want games you can play with friends, check out our updated list of the best co-op games you can play with friends both at home or far away. You'll see some great new entries there, including Baldur's Gate 3 and Lethal Company. Finally, Megan Farokhmanesh has a bit of a postmortem on E3, or the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which officially announced its own death earlier in the week. After struggling with its identity for decades—as to whether it was a trade show, a business-to-business media fest, or an all-out, open-doors gaming extravaganza—the pandemic finally put the nails in E3's coffin, and the convention never really managed to return. Then again, I think that's what we learned: Game companies are big enough now that they don't need an annual conference to hype up their big releases. And that'll do it for us this week, and for this year! The WIRED Games newsletter will be taking a break for the rest of the year, but we'll be back fresh in 2024 with more gaming news! Until then of course, head over to WIRED Games to see what's new. There'll definitely be new stuff between now and then. Happy holidays, and happy new year! |
