Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter folks! It's Wednesday, which means it's time to run down all the gaming news and other cool stuff we've covered this week. Remember, you can always tell us what you like about the newsletter, and what you want to see more of, just by hitting Reply or emailing us at games@WIRED.com! First up, Megan Farokhmanesh has a sharp and very appropriate obituary for E3 2023. Despite being a storied legacy event with an incredible brand, E3 has long since been outpaced by game publishers and developers marketing direct to consumers. Nintendo Directs and PlayStation Directs have proven far more successful and hype-generating than E3 could possibly be, and that's not even taking the Game Awards and Summer Games Fest into consideration. In short, streaming killed E3. Next, Eric Ravenscraft previews the newest support hero coming to Overwatch 2, named Lifeweaver, who has a unique ability that'll likely change the balance of power between classes in the game. Right now support characters that are tasked with keeping teammates alive with heals and buffs play a relatively passive role when it comes to strategy. Lifeweaver is about to change all that in a particularly chaotic way. It'll be fun to watch. Then, check out Julie Fukunaga's piece on how she's dealing with the tech layoffs by playing Going Under. In the game, you're a Silicon Valley intern—unpaid, of course—tasked with keeping the company afloat and running, more or less on your own. The threat of layoffs looms all the time, and the company is quite literally built atop the ruins of tech startups that came before it. It's a lot of fun and surprisingly good satire for tech today, even though the game was released in 2020. Over on the WIRED Gear Team's desk, our roundup of the best gaming laptops just got a shiny new refresh. If you're in the market, we have some tried and tested recommendations for you, including a new 18-inch model that's definitely a desktop replacement. And if you're getting a laptop, you may not have enough storage, so check out our list of the best portable storage drives—whether you want something fast to store games on or something huge to back up all those save games on. Finally, check out these great deals on video games, headphones, and more. Some may have expired by the time you read this, but I'm willing to bet a bunch of them are still happening. Treat yourself! Now then, have you been playing the Resident Evil 4 remake? I've been checking it out, and honestly, it makes me want to go back and play Resident Evil: Village, which I feel like was only yesterday. Ah, memories. I'll see you back here next week! |
