Happy Wednesday gamers, it's time for another WIRED Games newsletter! How's it going out there—are you all still playing Tears of the Kingdom? Ironically, the new Zelda has made me consider picking up the old Zelda, you know, Breath of the Wild, just to see how different the two games truly are. I mean, we know the new one is an improvement, fixing a lot of things about the old game that people complained about, but sometimes it helps to have that side-by-side comparison, you know? If you've played both and have thoughts about how they've changed, let us know at games@WIRED.com. First up, Megan Farokhmanesh has another Zelda-related banger on her hands. This week, she took time out to chat with the speedrunners who are trying to finish Tears of the Kingdom in ever-shorter times. When we published the story, the record was start to completion in just over an hour. That time has probably been smashed by now. It's interesting the lengths that speedrunners go in order to prep for game launches and get records. One bought multiple copies and even snagged one from the Australian version of Nintendo's online store to get it a few hours before everyone else. Talk about commitment. Next, let's head to our Gear Team for some updates. First, Jaina Grey and Eric Ravenscraft have some fresh picks in our guide to the best mechanical keyboards for work and for play. While I'm happy with the Steelseries I've been rocking, I have to admit there are some really solid contenders on the list. It's just a shame I can only use one keyboard at a time. If you're in the market for a new gaming headset, Ryan Waniata took a look at the brand-new Turtle Beach Stealth Pro Wireless and gave it a pretty compelling 8/10. Not bad for a wireless headset! He says the sound is great, the design isn't ostentatious, the battery life is solid, and it works well as headphones or as a headset you can speak through. Not bad at all. It is a little heavy, though, so keep that in mind. With Summer Games Fest on the horizon and June normally the time of year we would expect to see Los Angeles turn into the epicenter of the gaming universe, thanks to E3, now is a good time to look back at why the event isn't happening this year, and may not ever happen again. In short, streaming killed it, as Megan reported back in April when the event was canceled. I don't know if it'll come back ever, or if something else will come up in its place—guess we'll just have to wait and see. Just for giggles, I want to take a second to highlight Chris Haslam's review of the Dyson Zone headphones, which earned a 4/10. This is frankly about what I would expect. They look ridiculous from the outside, but if they were a good value you might be able to overlook that. But that's the neat thing: They aren't! They do have some things going for them, but for being so large, heavy, and expensive—and the butt of every joke possible—they're a pass. I mean, just look at them. |
