Welcome back to Wednesday! It's time for more games! This week has already been a busy one, with the launch of Redfall this week and Jedi Survivor at the end of last week. I'm sinking my teeth into Redfall, for one, in between playing Destiny 2 and Everspace 2 and [checks notes] Crab Champions. Yes, you read that right. Let's move on. First out of the gate this week, Will Bedingfield takes a sharp look at Nintendo in the runup to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where he looks at the company's pattern of issuing DMCA takedown requests anytime they stumble on someone playing a game or mod for one of their games that they don't like, regardless of whether the content is fair use. Will points out that Nintendo's aggressive takedown policy only serves to isolate and antagonize the company's biggest fans. Next up, on the business desk, Morgan Meeker and Chris Stokel-Walker have a great look at the fallout of the UK's antitrust authorities blocking the Microsoft–Activision Blizzard merger, and what that means for the US government's decision on the matter. There's a lot to unpack here, and while it's not certain that the multibillion-dollar merger is off completely, this definitely throws a significant wrench into things, especially in a moment where governments and regulators are more skeptical than ever about Big Tech and the power these companies hold. In other news, Simon Hill just updated our guide to shopping for Wi-Fi routers with a bunch of new information, including on Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, along with some great tips about making your Ethernet connections as fast as possible, on the back of our guide to everything you need to know about Ethernet. Simon's not done, though! If you're a retro gamer, he just updated our list of the best retro gaming consoles to include some new honorable mentions and to highlight the PiCade, which is new to the list. He has also updated our list of the best mobile gaming controllers, including models that attach to your phone, or console controllers you can use with your phone easily. And on that note, I'm awash in games this week, so I need to carve out some time to actually play all of them and write something about some of them. We've been playing a bunch of particularly ludicrous games here at WIRED lately. Would you all be interested in a roundup of some of the most off-kilter, socially aware games we've played recently? Let us know at games@WIRED.com, and we'll put it together for you! I'll see you next week! |
