Hello gamers, and welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter. You probably know I've been playing a ton of Destiny 2 this week (I have to get my Iron Lord title!) but I know a bunch of you have been playing Final Fantasy XVI, or you're sticking with Tears of the Kingdom, or maybe you're a streamer who's been playing Only Up! Instead of anything new. That's OK! I've been turning some of my attention to indie launches this week as well, so as soon as I get more hands-on time with the preview builds I'm playing with, you'll hear all about it. First up though, definitely read Reid McCarter's review of Final Fantasy XVI. Sure enough, the game definitely added blood, gore, and some bare butts, but at its core, it's still a Final Fantasy game, which comes with all the good and bad that franchise is associated with. Will you have fun? Almost certainly. Will you take issue with some of the thin characters and predictable storylines? Also certainly. But we leave you to your own conclusions: We're just here to tell you what to expect before you dive in. Next up, Megan Farokhmanesh got some preview time with Pikmin 4, Nintendo's next big summer launch, and she digs it: It's the perfect game to cozy up on the couch with, regardless of whether you're a Pikmin fan. I'm not—I never really got into the games—but that doesn't mean it's not a great game. Check out her preview before you decide to preorder; the game comes out next month. Will Bedingfield also has some hot takes this week, namely about how this world of gaming remakes we've found ourselves in could actually be a very bad thing, especially when it means original titles with new characters, new stories, and new adventures get sidelined in favor of an old story with some flashy new visuals. We've all seen what it looks like when we get a remake no one asked for, but if remakes are going to dominate the game industry, well, we're in trouble. If this sounds familiar, it should: Luke Winkie reminded us to slow down and think about remakes when The Last of Us: Part One came out. Anyway. If you're looking for something new to play that's not a remake, check out Louryn Strampe's rundown of the best gaming deals this month, before the month ends. You can still grab some heavily discounted games, and not bad ones either: There are steep cuts on titles like Hades, Persona 5 Royal, and more. See if there's anything in there for you, and if you pick something up, let us know at games@WIRED.com. I'll see you all next week! |
