| How's it going gamers? It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another WIRED Games newsletter—and boy do I have some opinions this week. Between the announcements at last week's Summer Game Fest and this past weekend's Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, we've seen some incredible trailers for fairly big titles coming before the end of this year (I see you, Starfield) and some other upcoming games that I can't wait to play, like 33 Immortals, from the folks who made Spiritfarer, and South of Midnight, which is tapping into that Southern Gothic charm with some solid Creole vibe to it. Of course there were other names too—upcoming Persona games from Atlus, and, suspiciously, news about story content coming in August for Overwatch 2, mere weeks after Activision Blizzard said it was giving up on PvE in the game. We'll see what shape this takes. I want to believe, I really do. But let's move on to our stories, shall we? First up, Megan Farokhmanesh takes a look at how the massive success of Diablo IV is a breather for a company that's, even now, still embroiled in harassment cases and labor disagreements. If you're just looking now and wondering "what's the deal with Blizzard, anyway," this piece is a good primer on what's happened in the past, where we are today, and likely where the company is heading. And speaking of Diablo IV, if you missed our deep dive on how the sound designers for the game created all of the audio you're hearing, definitely take a look at this piece from Luke Winkie that includes video of Activision Blizzard sound designers and engineers making the game come to life. Next up, Simon Hill on our Gear team just updated our picks for the best Wi-Fi routers. Remember, if you haven't replaced yours in several years, you might want to at least check and make sure it's still getting regular firmware updates and support from the manufacturer. If you're wondering why your Wi-Fi speeds are slow, or your latency in games is so sporadic, it might be time for an upgrade. Finally, some quick updates on some of our best-game lists! We refreshed our picks for the best games on Xbox Game Pass with titles like Hypnospace Outlaw and Chicory: A Colorful Tale. We also updated our list of the best games on PlayStation Plus, with new games like Humanity and Riders Republic. Finally, we updated our long-standing picks for the best PC games you can play forever, adding Cities: Skylines (did you see that teaser for Cities: Skylines 2 in the Xbox Showcase?) and Rocket League, among others. Check it out if you want something to play while we wait for the fall releases to start rolling in. And I'll see you back here next week! |
