Happy Wednesday, gamers! It's time for another WIRED Games newsletter, and we have plenty of news for you this week—assuming you can pull yourself away from Starfield or Baldur's Gate 3 or whatever else you're playing. I, for one, have been clearing the Crota's End raid in Destiny 2, so I've got that going for me. Let's get right into it so you (and I) can get back to gaming, shall we? First off, Meghan Farokhmanesh has a semi-eulogy for the era of Charles Martinet as the voice actor behind Mario. Martinet is stepping down as Mario's primary VA and will now be an "ambassador" for Mario, traveling the globe to events and making appearances. But who'll voice Mario going forward? Nintendo is keeping quiet on that front for now. Next up, Will Bedingfield points out that Starfield will, like other Bethesda games before it, be the meme game for years to come. That means we'll see weird game bugs that will make us laugh and awkward NPCs that go viral on the internet, and the game will get modded into a whole new experience thanks to the company's openness to mods and community support. We're all looking forward to it. The game is already great, and the company's approach to its community makes it even better. Michael Calore and Lauren Goode are the hosts of WIRED's Gadget Lab podcast, and this week's episode is all about Roblox, the only company with what could be considered a viable "metaverse," and all before that word even really existed. The company has been picking up some interesting partnerships, including support for Zoom meetings and Facetime calls using Roblox avatars and backgrounds. It's a really interesting move to shake up video calling, not to mention retain its players as they grow up and hopefully don't grow out of Roblox entirely. Finally, in our news roundup last week, we noted that Nintendo has reportedly been giving developers and some select other folks private demos of "Nintendo Switch 2" hardware, or whatever the next major upgrade to the Nintendo Switch will be called. Obviously there are no details on what that hardware is, when we'll see it, or even when we might learn more, but at least we do know that Nintendo is definitely planning an upgrade to the Switch, and probably in the near future. Now then, that's it for us this week! We'll let you get back to Starfield (or just the memes), or maybe that's just me. I promise, it's not all I have on deck! I need to put some time into the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and then I want to get back to Armored Core 6, which I put down a little early, and then there's the indie titles I've been playing lately … OK, I'll let you go. Hit us up at Games@WIRED.com if you need anything, and we'll see you back here next week. |
