Hey gamers, welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter! This week we've been watching what's happening in the field, with scores of layoffs at major studios and companies, and playing the games that have already come out. There's no defending the former, especially when those same companies report record profits and CEO compensation packages so large that reducing them by even a fraction would save more money than the jobs they cut. There's plenty of fun in the latter though: The new Dead Space remake looks great and is tons of fun (and a couple of us here at WIRED spent time with it over the weekend). And even though people didn't expect much from it, Forspoken is surprisingly fun and no, its dialog isn't as bad as some people want you to think. Similarly, last week's shadow drop, Hi-Fi Rush, is a fun, rhythm-based, colorful adventure that I think these dark winter days really needed. So all around, it's a good time to be a gamer, even if it's not as great a time to work in gaming. Beyond that, let's touch on the news we hit during the past week, shall we? First, Will Bedingfield took a look at generative AI and its applications in game development, and while there's certainly promise, it's not there yet. In short, generative AI could help game devs do their jobs faster and more easily, but right now the tech is too immature, and the people interested in it are usually using it for the wrong things (as any actual artist will tell you). Now we don't cover chess all that often, but this is a great story: The biggest player in the online chess arena, Chess.com, is a victim of its own success right now, with surging traffic and tons of new players. Of course, that also brings bad actors that the site hasn't had to deal with in the past, and well, now it's a whole thing. But fingers crossed that the site can sustain itself through this overwhelming interest—a legion of new chess players are engaged with the game, and that's always good to see. Oh, and if you're one of those new players with an interest in the game, we have some tips right here from a chess expert on how to learn online, how to play against bots versus real people, and how to hone your skills for real-world play if you want to take your game to the next level. This week's round-up of gadget news from our Gear Team highlighted something of interest to us gamers: namely, that Apple's approach to VR is slowly starting to take shape, and while it's probably going to be extremely expensive, so far the only company involved in the space that's had success selling very expensive products to a niche audience is, well, Apple. Also from our Gear Team come two very timely updates: First, if you're thinking about a new TV, either because right around the Super Bowl is the best time to buy one (if you're not buying around Black Friday/Cyber Monday, that is) or because you want a bigger screen with better features, definitely read our updated guide to the best TVs, along with some smart shopping tips. And last, we updated our guide to the best webcams, with new pricing and better models. If you're still rocking the one on your laptop's bezel, check out this guide for something better. On that note, I'm heading back to Forspoken while my friend streams Dead Space. I'll see you back here next week. |
