Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter, gamers. It's Wednesday again, which means it's time to talk games and all things adjacent. I'm super sleepy, but that's because I spent a good bit of the weekend raiding in Destiny 2. No raid exotics though, which means I just have to go back in! Let's get started. First of all, let's take a trip to Pakistan, where trying to get your hands on current-generation PC gaming hardware isn't just a struggle, it's so difficult and rife with scams that it risks throwing the country's whole digital economy into disarray. This isn't the first time we've discussed how hard it is to be a gamer in Pakistan, but then we were talking about some of the people trying to make changes. This time, WIRED contributor Zuha Siddiqui takes a look at how one order for the PlayStation turned into a virtual nightmare of scams and lost cash, none of which should be the norm. Next up, do you remember a game called Cart Life? It's OK if you don't, it's been almost 10 years since the game was abruptly pulled from Steam by Richard Hofmeier, its creator. This week, Megan Farokhmanesh found him to talk about the rapid rise of the game, its indie darling status, and why he pulled it at the peak of its popularity. And good news: Cart Life is coming back. It's a different world now, but I see the game being just as good as it was in 2014, and just as poignant—if not more so—today as it was back then. Megan isn't done though: She also had the opportunity to sit down with the gaming team at Netflix to discuss the future of Netflix Games. Suffice it to say, they really, really want to make Netflix Games a thing, and there are some very long-term plans to get there. Considering how difficult it is to even access the games, and their relatively low popularity, it's a steep climb. But it sounds like the team is optimistic about the future of their games project. Let's chat a little bit about gear now, shall we? First of all, our Gear Team has a fresh rundown of some of the best wired headphones for serious listening, which may be very, very interesting for some of you. I know when I'm not playing games, I'm probably browsing too many headphones and listening to music, so maybe one or a few of these might make your ears just as happy as your eyes. And if you're doing that listening at your desk, the team has also updated their guide to the best office chairs, so get your butt out of that ancient wooden dining room chair and into something that'll properly support your back and neck. Bonus: I'll personally vouch for the seat cushion mentioned near the bottom of the list. It's been life-changing. I'll see you back here next week. |
