Hello, gamers! I'm back this week, and all my thanks to Megan Farokhmanesh for covering the newsletter last week! You'll be seeing more of her, I think. For now though, how about that Spider-Man 2, huh? It came out of the gate strong, and virtually everyone I know is playing it. Late contender for game of the year, truly. And that's not even mentioning Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which has also been blowing people's minds. But there are lots of great games this week, including some great smaller titles, like Wizard with a Gun and Slay the Princess, among others. Are you playing something smaller, something quieter right now? Let us know at games@WIRED.com. We're getting geared up for end-of-year gaming coverage, and we'd love to hear what you're playing! Now then, let's get into it. Speaking of Spider-Man 2, Reece Rogers has a great rundown of tips to help you get the best start in the game. If you, like me, spent the better part of a day downloading the game to your PS5, you might want those tips to help you get right into the action. (And no spoilers: The game will definitely put you right into the action. Enjoy!) Also, speaking of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Megan has her impressions of the game right here. It's a great game! And it showcases how Nintendo is trying to change the way they make their games to embrace new mechanics, new tools, and hopefully new audiences, all while staying true to what makes their characters and worlds fun for players. Check out her full article, whether you've played it already or you're thinking about picking it up. She's followed up her impressions of the game with a look at why Mario is so quiet in Wonder, especially after all of the hubbub over the change in casting. Megan wasn't done last week though. She also covered the departure of Pete Hines, the head of publishing at Bethesda. Hines had worked on virtually all of Bethesda's most popular titles, from Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 to most recently, Starfield. Also in games industry news, if you didn't catch Angela Watercutter, our culture editor, analyzing the close of the Microsoft/Bethesda deal, you should read it. The shadow this deal is going to cast across the industry is long, and will be felt for years to come, both in great ways and in more problematic ones. If you play on PC and your friends play on consoles, or you all prefer to play wherever you feel most comfortable on a given day, you might want to check out Eric Ravenscraft's rundown of the best crossplay games for PC and consoles. All of them are games you can put down on the couch and pick up at your desk, or play from your PC while your friends are on console. Or vice versa! Whatever you prefer. I'll see you back here next week! |
