| Now then, let's get to it. First off, you may have heard that Microsoft said last week that it has plans to bring Microsoft and Xbox games to every platform. This isn't especially new. After all, Phil Spencer told us back in 2020 that the future of Xbox goes beyond console hardware. But the reality of the move means that while Microsoft's games will eventually be playable anywhere, Xbox buyers may not have "exclusives" the way we remember console exclusives to be. And boy are some of them mad about it. Megan Farokhmanesh has the full story about it—and about why, in practicality, it doesn't matter—but if there's anything you can trust about the gaming community, it's that rationality doesn't always play in to people's opinions. This is a great example of one of those moments. Speaking of Megan, she has another great piece this week on how the cult classic (and excellent game) Spec Ops: The Line, a military shooter that subverts your expectations of what a shooter is supposed to be and forces you to come face to face with the effects of warfare, got delisted from Steam not too long ago. It won't be the last beloved game to vanish because of licensing or other issues with digital delivery platforms, which is another issue that has long vexed those passionate about game preservation, as we've covered before. Next up, Eric Ravenscraft on our Gear team has an excellent review of the Maingear MG-1, a solidly built and well-performing prebuilt gaming PC that, surprise, actually has room for upgrades if you need them. Eric gave the PC a solid 9/10, which is enough of a ringing endorsement that maybe it deserves to be your next gaming rig, especially if you're the type to build your own. Last but not least, my parting wish for all of you is that you stay hydrated while sitting at your desk gaming away. To help, our Gear team has a great rundown of the best refillable, reusable water bottles you can buy, complete with information on that whole lead-in-the-manufacturing problem that has impacted some of the more virally popular models. Check it out, get yourself something nice, and fill it with water. Take care, and I'll see you on Twitch sometime, or maybe in your favorite multiplayer game's lobby even sooner than that. |
