Happy Wednesday friends, and welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter! Last week was CES, which usually doesn't mean too much when it comes to gaming, but this year we saw some tidbits of news from the conference that were definitely interesting. If you missed our CES coverage (and I don't know how you could have, our Gear Team was all over the show,) you can check out our rundown of the best of CES right here. But for now, on to the games! At a CES press event, Sony announced Project Leonardo, its first accessible game controller. The upcoming controller will be fully adaptive and customizable, and it's compatible with the PlayStation 5. Grant Stoner got the exclusive and had the opportunity to chat with PlayStation president and CEO Jim Ryan about the company's commitment to making its games and consoles accessible to all players. We're not sure when the controller will actually be available, but you can check out what it looks like and what Sony says you'll be able to do with it in our piece. Next up, definitely read Laurence Russell's piece on how 3D printing may represent a sea change in tabletop gaming, specifically wargaming—where players are usually expected to buy and collect game pieces that can often be expensive over time. Enter 3D printing to save players time and money! But major IP holders aren't particularly thrilled by the notion of people essentially pirating game pieces (or entire games.) In this story, Russell breaks down the whole issue and talks to some great game designers using 3D printing to lower costs. It's a new month, which means new games on Xbox Game Pass, so we're taking a fresh look and updating our guide to the best Game Pass games you can play right now. Among the new titles on the list are Potion Craft, Pentiment, and Metal: Hellsinger. Check out the whole list—you'll find something great, I promise. Plus, we're working on a PlayStation counterpart to this guide, so stay tuned if you're a PS Plus subscriber. Next up, Eric Ravenscraft continues a beat he's had for years at various publications: explaining how to justify our expensive gaming hardware purchases by using them to be productive as well. In this case, he explains how to make the most of an Elgato Stream Deck, whether you use it for work or play. They're popular with streamers, but you don't have to be one to use and love the accessory. Finally, if the new year has you in the market for a gaming laptop, we just updated our list of the best options. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 remains our top pick, but we've got updates on the most recent models from Dell and Razer, along with their prices. At the very least, it's worth seeing what you can get for the money! Now then, that should do it for this week. As always, we're here at games@WIRED.com if you have questions, thoughts, or ideas, and we're always happy to hear from you! I'll see you back here next week. |
