Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter, gamers. For me, this is the week before the launch of Destiny 2: Lightfall, the latest expansion in the franchise, and if I can just survive this week, I'll be home free. Cross your fingers for me, OK? While in-game I'm preparing for the update, out of the game I was lucky enough to get my hands on just about everything in the Steelseries' new Lightfall-themed limited collection last week. If you're a fan of the franchise (or just really love that electric blue and pink cyberpunk-style aesthetic), it's worth a look. The collection includes the Arctis 7+ wireless headset, which we've reviewed here (and gave an impressive 8/10), as well as the company's Aerox 5 wireless mouse (its bigger cousin, the Aerox 9, is also one of our favorites). If that's not enough, there's an RGB desk mat and some super-grippy performance thumbsticks for both Xbox and PlayStation controllers, so you can grab whichever you need. I can tell you the thumbsticks that come with the case shaped like the Traveler also arrives with an emblem code you can redeem in-game, not that I've redeemed mine already or anything. I should also note that I'm testing—for as much as one can "test"—Bungie's NERF Gjallarhorn rocket launcher, which I wrote about back when it was announced. Yes, they sent me one. Yes, it's massive and quite heavy. Yes, I also live in a small apartment where firing a literal NERF rocket launcher may be ill-advised. The things I do for you guys, I swear. Expect something about that over the weekend, hopefully. Also, if you're like me and spend so much money on peripherals that you don't have much to spend on actual video games, consider taking a look at Omar Gallaga's excellent piece from a little while ago about how to build a huge PC game library for free (or at least very, very affordably). While we're here solving my own problems apparently, I recently picked up a Switch stand on the cheap on Amazon because I wanted to connect my Switch to one of my monitors at my desk (not to mention to my PC capture card for future Twitch streaming). The stand is … fine, but it doesn't work with the protective case I keep on the Switch, and I'm never truly sure if it's charging AND working properly. I might replace it with the one in our guide to the best Nintendo Switch accessories, which looks like it works with some cases, and even elevates the console so it can charge and be seen at the same time. Finally, as we're closing out Black History Month, I want to point back to a brilliant feature that Jamal Michel wrote for us last year on the duality of being Black in gaming spaces. It's a sharp, smart reflection on what it's like to exist in a space that's at best neutral to your presence and at worst hostile—but a space that Black gamers have always inhabited, since before games became mainstream. Give it a read, and I'll see you back here next week. |
