Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter, friends! What have you all been playing this week? You know me and how much time I spend in Destiny 2—I'm counting the days down to the launch of Lightfall. Bungie took notice of my … [checks notes] … 3,300 hours in the game and sent me a NERF Gjallarhorn rocket launcher to try out, so expect to hear more about that shortly. First impressions: It's huge. Like, really, really big. But on to the week's gaming news! First of all, Megan Farokhmanesh took a look at the Dead Space remake, which by all accounts is very, very good, and examined why the game is so creepy even after all this time: It's the sound design. While the updated graphics and subtle visceral changes certainly help, the game's sound design—and by extension, the sound design of lots of horror games—are designed to trigger the kinds of noises and sounds that create tangible bodily anxiety for most people. It's a fun look at how even small things make us feel big feelings. Hot on the heels of the massive success of The Last of Us TV show, Will Bedingfield sat down with the original voice cast for the game, including names like Troy Baker, Merle Dandridge, and Ashley Johnson, to talk to them about their impressions of the show. They shared that initially they weren't sure you could translate the same interactive, personal experience into passive TV drama, but as soon as they read the script, they were all-in. It's a great Q&A. Next up, Reece Rogers dug through all of the games available to PlayStation Plus subscribers to choose the best ones you can grab right now. We'll keep this list updated over time as titles drift in and out of Sony's game subscription offering, so if you look through the list and you don't see anything you want to play right now, you will soon, I'm sure of it. In this week's Gear roundup, Boone Ashworth took a quick peek at Razer's newest mouse, the Viper Mini Signature Edition, a lightweight mouse made from a magnesium alloy that costs—get this—a whopping $280. Want one? Also from the Gear Team this week are a couple of stories that can help you improve your home network if you're interested in faster speeds and better coverage. First, if you have a lot of square footage to cover, you might consider a mesh network, and our guide to the best models has just been updated with newly tested picks. But if you live in a smaller home or a city apartment like me, you only need one good router to cover your entire home in glorious, speedy Wi-Fi, and here are the best ones to choose from. Now then, it's back to the drafts for us over here, but we'll have some fun bits ready to share next week, including a review of that game that shall not be named. You know the one. Beyond that though, if you need anything, want to share some memes, or have some games you'd like us to check out, we're here at games@WIRED.com waiting for your note. Just be nice, and we'll be back here next week. |
