It's Wednesday, gamers, so I'm here in your inbox. Hello! Welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter. It's been a pretty quiet week all told, aside from the launch trailer for Overwatch 2's fourth season, which looks pretty cool and kinda has me in my feels. I spent this weekend playing a lot of Everspace 2, which also came out last week. I wound up saying "let's give it a whirl" over the weekend, and I've been having so much fun flying around in space and shooting bad guys. If anyone remembers 2003's Freelancer, you'll love this, but I don't know if anyone else loves that old game the way I did. Anyway, let's get into the news of the week, shall we? I have ships to fly. First up, Eric Ravenscraft just reviewed the BenQ Mobiuz OLED Gaming Monitor, a massive 48-inch display that will set you back a whopping $1500. He gave it a 6/10 because while it's certainly fancy, at this point you may as well just buy a TV and use it as a monitor instead. But if you do definitely need a monitor that'll dominate your desk, check out the full review, and his alternatives. Eric's not done though! He also took a look at Tetris, as in the movie, which tells the story of how the classic game came to be. If you're not familiar with the game or the Cold War history of how it was made and distributed in the West, is actually fascinating. You'll definitely want to play Tetris after watching the movie. Or maybe you'll play while you watch the movie, but I wouldn't recommend it; you don't want to miss anything. Now then, Parker Hall just published our list of the best USB microphones, so if you're down to upgrade from a gaming headset or you have plans to stream on Twitch or YouTube in the future, we have some picks for you. That Shure on the list is looking pretty good to me right now. Should I upgrade? If you're interested in a more thoughtful read, Adrienne So wrote this lovely piece about parenting and guardianship through the lens of The Last of Us, the TV show, but the story is something that anyone who had to raise children through the dangers of the pandemic—which is still a thing, in case you forgot—can relate to. Finally, a couple of simple PC tips and tricks that might help your gaming PC run a little faster and more smoothly. First, Justin Pot on how to stop random nonsense from running when you start your Windows PC, something I recently had to take a look at now that I've rebuilt my gaming PC. Second, Scott Gilbertson just updated our guide to backing up your digital life. Two simple things to take a look at, but they can have a huge effect. Remember, it's not a matter of if your hard drives will fail, but when, so make sure to back up your data. I'll see you back here next week! |
