Hello gamers! Thanks for looking up from Tears of the Kingdom long enough to check out the WIRED Games newsletter! Welcome back, and don't worry, I won't keep you from saving Hyrule and getting revenge on dehydrated Ganon for what he did to your arm. I got you. Let's jump right in, shall we? First of all, definitely check out our review of Tears of the Kingdom, since Will Bedingfield had some time to play through the game before it came out. Bottom line, it's an incredible game that iterates on the formula pioneered by Breath of the Wild. And that's perfectly OK. This game didn't need to take risks; it just needed to build on the success of its predecessor. And it does exactly that, in all the best possible ways. You'll love it, and it's a strong contender for Game of the Year. Next, Megan Farokhmanesh has also been playing Tears of the Kingdom, but she's been spending her time building the most incredible, strange, impressive, and cursed objects imaginable. And it's been a blast. The way the game embraces your mad scientist impulses and encourages you to make the strangest flying machines, land vehicles, and other wild things is truly special. Stepping away from the new Zelda game, David Nield has a rundown of the accessibility settings on your Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5. If you haven't checked out those menus because you immediately thought they weren't for you, you should really give them a look. There are lots of features that may be able to help you even if you don't consider yourself in need of them. If you've been in the market for a Valve Steam Deck but have heard about an upcoming handheld PC gaming console coming from Asus, now's your time: Eric Ravenscraft just reviewed the Asus ROG Ally, which he gives a 3/10. Yikes! It's a welcome contender, but a poor interface and surprisingly short battery life make it not really worth $700. I haven't been hands-on with one myself, but Eric's full review tells the tale. The Gear team just updated our list of the best gaming headsets for every system, so if you're in the market for an audio upgrade, we have some new choices for you, including entries from Steelseries and HyperX. Finally, also from our Gear team, our favorite STEM toys for the younger folks in your life—or yourself. (I won't judge. I, too, enjoy a little robotics challenge or puzzle game from time to time!) Now then, I'll let you get back to it. If you stumble on anything particularly fun or funny in the game or in the discourse around it, let us know over at games@WIRED.com, would you? I've already seem some amazing creations in Tears of the Kingdom, and I'm sure there'll be even more as people spend more time with it. I'll see you back here next week! |
