| | | | Brought to you by: | | | | | Wednesday, May 17, 2023 | When you've worked in our industry long enough, observing your thought process can be quite the journey. Yesterday, for instance, I caught myself using the term "embarrassment of riches" to describe simultaneous Senate hearings on AI. Yes, my friends – it's come to that. But we've all been there. (Right?) Of the two, my remarkable news writers were assigned to observe one titled "Oversight of A.I.: Rules for Artificial Intelligence": A Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing that heard testimony from several experts, including none other than OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) CEO Sam Altman. The line of questioning was intriguing – perhaps it was slightly more informed or civil. But my internal monologue still contained its usual skepticism. As Matt Southern writes in his recap of the testimony, Altman argued in favor of regulating his company's technology, while also making the point "that regulation shouldn't stifle innovation or small business growth." That's the thing: I've heard that before, in 2018, when Meta (then Facebook) CEO Mark Zuckerberg made similar comments during his own congressional hearings. So I have to ask: Will things play out differently this time? Until we know the answer, our industry continues to move. In case you missed it: - Microsoft unveiled a new mobile-first experience for Bing & Edge. Matt Southern reviews the enhancements here.
- HomeAdvisor was penalized by the FTC for alleged false claims about leads. Why does that matter? Roger Montti breaks it all down here.
- Plus, a look at how to blend data in looker studio from Vahan Petrosyan.
What about you? I'm here, eager to hear what's getting you excited about our industry and the questions you're asking. Until the next embarrassment of riches, AZW Generative AI, News By Matt G. Southern The issue of oversight and regulation for artificial intelligence (AI) has been brought to the forefront in a hearing held today by the Judiciary Committee. Policymakers and AI experts, including Sam Altman, ChatGPT's creator, and OpenAI's CEO, discussed the technology's possibilities and challenges. Altman highlighted AI's potential for scientific advancement, from curing cancer to modeling climate change, but warned about the potential harms, including disinformation, housing discrimination, harassment, and fraud. The promises of AI are immense, and the risks are equally significant. Discussions like the one held today are essential for finding the right approach to regulation and ensuring the responsible use of AI. | | | | | Search Engine Journal By SHOPSEJ Get your brand in front of marketers, entrepreneurs, and business pros who want to do their job more successfully. You can create custom charts and reports that provide a comprehensive view of your data, bringing together insights from multiple data sources. This technique can be particularly useful for S.E.O. pros and digital marketers when you need to compare data from different sources. With these examples, you can see how many useful data insights you can get by combining data from different data sources. Many of you have access to Ahrefs, Semrush, on any other S.E.O. tool, and you can try to blend backlink data with Google Analytics referral traffic data to understand the impact of your backlinks on your website traffic. The key principle here is to create dimensions in two data sets with the same Field I.D.s, which will be used in blending. | | | | | Webinar By Search Engine Journal With the SEO industry ever evolving and new trends constantly emerging, how do you make sure your content is up to the latest search standards? Even if you believe that search has moved on from PageRank, there's no denying that it has long been a pervasive concept in the industry. Every SEO pro should have a good grasp of what PageRank was – and what it still is today. Google's algorithm was initially believed to be "unspam-able" internally, since the importance of a page was dictated not just by its content but also by a sort of "voting system" generated by links to the page. Google's confidence did not last, however. PageRank started to become problematic as the backlink industry grew. So Google withdrew it from public view, but continued to rely on it for its ranking algorithms. | | | Generative AI, News By Matt G.
